That title may have gotten your attention, and if so, GREAT!
For most of my life I’ve heard people talk about, decree and declare, make promises and tell the world about their New Year Resolutions. Many years ago I participated in programs like ‘A NEW YEAR, A NEW YOU’, and ‘A NEW YOU IN 2002’. Please don’t misunderstand; in my experience, New Year resolutions are ALL well-intended. There’s something about a fresh start at the beginning of a new year. Besides, New Year resolutions give our friends and loved ones reasons to hold us accountable. I get it. But here’s a brief thought.
Let’s not allow a date on the calendar to drive our resolve to implement changes, make improvements, and alter the trajectories of our lives. Why wait? if we feel the need to change on March 3, that’s as good a time as any to start turning things around. You could do so on June 23, or even December 19. As a presenter your resolution could be, “I’ll write my next speech first thing next year.” or perhaps, I’ll sign up for that master workshop in January.” or maybe “I resolve to get a speaking coach for New Year.” Forget NEW YEAR resolutions; make resolutions at any time, and follow through. Simply start with the decision and act on it. I believe you’ll be glad you did.
